Sarah Unaware

Sarah pushed open the door to her apartment with an exhausted sigh. It had been a hellish summer day: endless hours at work in sweltering heat, crowded public transportation where the air conditioning had given up the ghost, and feet screaming in pain in her tight shoes. The July sun was still beating down outside, and her body was covered in a thin layer of sweat. All she wanted was to relax. "Phew!" she said. "Finally home. It's so hot today."

She threw her bag on the sofa and headed for the living room, turning on the air conditioning as she went. Without further ado, she removed her shoes with a weary gesture. Ah, what a relief! Her bare feet, swollen and sweaty, finally touched the cool floor. The acrid smell of perspiration spread subtly through the room—a mixture of warm leather, accumulated sweat, and the lotion she had forgotten to apply that morning. Sarah wiggled her toes, savoring her freedom, unaware of the drama unfolding at her feet.

Across the street lived Emma, her friendly neighbor, a woman always ready to exchange recipes or water the plants when she was away. But that morning, everything had changed for Emma. She had shrunk to the size of an ant, no more than two centimeters tall. Panicked, she had crawled across the street, avoiding cars and passersby like giant monsters. Her goal: to reach Sarah, the only person she knew nearby, to beg for help. "She'll see me, she'll help me get back to normal," she had told herself as she climbed over the threshold of the door that had been left ajar by mistake.

Emma had managed to get inside, panting, covered in dust. She had shouted in her high-pitched, tiny voice at the colossal figure of Sarah coming in. But the sound of footsteps had drowned out her calls. And now, as Sarah took off her shoes, Emma found herself trapped on the floor, right in front of those titanic feet. Sarah's feet were enormous, like living cliffs. The skin, reddened by the heat, glistened with sweat, droplets beading between her toes. The smell was suffocating for Emma—a powerful wall of odor, a mixture of salt, dampness, and a hint of acid that stung her eyes. Emma said, "Oh my God, what's that stench? How is it possible for feet to stink so much?"

Every movement of the toes made the floor shake; a simple rub sent waves of hot air laden with that summer stench. Emma backed away, terrified, waving her arms frantically. "Sarah! Down there! Look down there!" she screamed, but her voice was lost in the void.

Sarah, oblivious to everything, stepped forward to get a glass of water. Her right foot came down like a meteor, narrowly missing Emma. The wind from the movement threw her backwards, and she rolled into a puddle of sweat that had fallen from the heel. Sticky and exhausted, Emma looked up at this benevolent giant who, without knowing it, was threatening to crush her. How could she get her attention without ending up trampled? The evening was just beginning, and for Emma, every second was a fight for survival against these bare, stinking, sweaty feet.
